Consulting / License / Cooperation

Acute container congestion is again a growing concern not only in Hamburg but at many major ports throughout the world. Container terminals being the interchange between the various modes of container transport are nowadays a congestion hotspot. Many ports suffer not only from a shortage of their quayside facilities but also railway and especially road capacities have been more than exhausted affecting smooth hinterland and internal port logistics.

The Port Feeder Barge concept can help to ease container port operation by:

  • replacing container trucking within the port
  • reducing feeder vessel shifting
  • providing a better intermodal access for inland waterway vessels
  • reducing environmental impact of container transfer considerably

Even in minor ports which suffer from shallow water and/or insufficient shorebased container handling equipment the Port Feeder Barge can help:

Seagoing vessels could be served at anchorage by the Port Feeder Barge which subsequently would shuttle the boxes to shorebased facilities which do not require deep water nor any container cranes. Such solution is less costly, quicker to realise and more flexible than the construction of new quay facilities.

Even the typical “midstream operation” in Hong Kong can be much improved by deploying Port Feeder Barge.

PORT FEEDER BARGE HAMBURG Logo

The Concept

The Port Feeder Barge is intended to be deployed as a green logistic innovation within the Port of Hamburg in order to ease internal container operation. The innovative vessel is a smart alternative to road trucking. It shall ply between the various terminals in order to shift the intra-port container haulage from road to waterway.

A daily round-the-port-service will be offered. The vessel shall call at all major terminals on a regular basis but will also serve smaller facilities on demand. One additional regular call shall be at a central berth to meet with the inland waterway vessels for direct ship-to-ship box transfer in order to shorten their time consuming trips around the port.

The Port Feeder Barge is aiming for three business fields:
